Clean ear practice3/30/2023 ![]() ![]() You need to determine a “cleaning cycle” that is appropriate for you and that prevents excessive earwax from clogging up your ears and your hearing aids. It may be as often as every 3 months or only once a year. How often should you clean your ears? That depends. Do not use high pressure squeeze the water gently into the ear canal. Fill an ear syringe with water and carefully wash out the ear. Then tilt your head so the ear being cleaned is facing down over the bathroom basin. It should be the temperature of your body-not too hot, not too cold. To remove this dissolved wax from your ear, start by filling your bathroom sink with water. The liquid will break down the thick heavy wax into a runny liquid. Make sure you feel the liquid run deep down your ear canal. Have your spouse or other partner pull your ear open, and put about 6 drops of the liquid into the canal. The ear canal has to be vertical so the liquid runs into the canal. It helps if you lie down on a couch and hold your head so that your ear canal is facing straight up. To be effective, the liquid has to run deep into the ear. Unfortunately, most of the time, the liquid does not run into the ear, and so it doesn’t help soften the wax and remove it from the ear. People often think they should tilt their head and pour some of this heavy liquid into their ears. Unfortunately, the instructions on the bottle are not very clear. It has a “bubbling” action that dissolves and softens wax and other debris in the ear canal. If you do not have any earwax cleaning liquid at home, I suggest that you go to the drugstore and purchase an earwax cleaning kit.Ĭarbamide Peroxide works like Hydrogen Peroxide. This chemical is sold under the trade names of Debrox, X-Wax, Murine EarWax Kits, and many other names. The only medicine approved by the Food and Drug Administration for use in cleaning ears is Carbamide Peroxide. When the sound tube is plugged, the hearing aid goes “dead.” Earwax is notorious for plugging up hearing aids. It is often seen as a dark-brown thick paste that has the consistency of Vaseline. ![]() Go see your ear doctor (ENT) first before you consider cleaning your ears.Įarwax, more technically known as Cerumen, comes in many consistencies (thicknesses) from thick and hard to runny. If you have any ear pain, drainage from your ear, a hole (perforation) in your eardrum, or any other type of ear problem, do not attempt to clean your ears yourself. If you have continuing problems with ear wax, it may be helpful to use a few drops of olive oil once a week to keep the wax soft and aid the natural movement of skin cells and wax.Important note: The information in this article is for patients who have been checked by a medical doctor and told that it is all right for them to clean their ears. Irrigating the ears takes away the protective layer of wax so it is important that you keep them dry for a few days as so after the procedure. ![]() It is important that the water is at a comfortable temperature, you must say if it feels to warm or too cold. If you experience any pain or dizziness during the procedure, tell the nurse immediately. It can be uncomfortable to have your ears irrigated but it should not be painful. To minimise the risk of injury, the wax should be softened with olive oil drops 1-2 times daily for 3-4 days prior to the consultation for wax removal. If you have ever have surgery to your ears or have had a perforated ear drum, you must tell us before the procedure is carried out. Partial blockage of the ear canal only requires irrigation if you wear a hearing aid or need a special examination.Įar irrigation can cause injury to the ears, ranging from minor infection, acute and chronic tinnitus (ringing in the ears), to perforation of the ear drum and deafness. Never use cotton buds to clean inside your ears as they irritate the delicate skin inside the ear canal, they will also push the wax back into the ear and compact it.Įar irrigation is not risk free therefore it is only carried out if the ear is completely blocked with ear wax. ![]() The ear is self cleaning and the wax normally works its way out naturally. Ear wax is a normal body secretion it provides protection against infection and dust particles. ![]()
